Working in Home Care: Why There Is No Career More Rewarding

Working for a home health agency is both a very rewarding and humbling experience. It is undoubtedly a great privilege to be invited into our client’s homes when they are most vulnerable and to be wholly trusted to provide excellent care in the ease of their own environment.

Although there are many reasons why health care providers love working in home care, here are the top 4 reasons why it is a highly fulfilling career:

1. Helping Clients Stay at Home – The thought of having to move from home to a retirement or nursing home is a very scary and often unwanted outcome for many people who are having difficulty managing on their own. Home care can be a life-changing service that allows clients to remain at home and to receive the specialized care they need to remain medically stable, supported and safe. As a homecare provider, we take great pride in knowing we play a part in keeping clients at home, where they are comfortable and desperately want to be.

2. To Help Make Life Easier – Clients with physical, cognitive and/or mental disabilities may have difficulty accomplishing tasks that most of us take for granted. Activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, mobilizing and eating can be more easily achieved with the help of a home care provider and is invaluable to clients. Being able to make life more manageable for many clients in such simple, but meaningful ways is greatly rewarding for home care providers.

3. Providing Companionship – No matter the reason a client is seen in their home, you can be assured the social interaction and companionship they receive helps to combat isolation, depression and loneliness. Studies have also shown that companionship helps reduce risks for Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular problems and mental health issues.  As satisfying as a home visit can be for clients, this relationship also provides immeasurable rewarding personal benefits for the caregivers as well.

4. A Rewarding and Fulfilling Career – Many health providers that work in homecare do so because the experience has tremendous professional and personal rewards. Clients put their trust in us when they are at their most vulnerable and rely on us to provide very personal, but necessary care. To know you can make such a meaningful impact in a person’s life and help ease the worry for families is priceless.

As someone who has worked in the home health field for over 9 years, I can truly say it is my passion. I get joy out of being able to help the elderly in our community in their time of need. When you have a client call in and tell you they are very pleased with both your agency and the staff you have coming to help them in their home, it makes you feel great to do the job you do and work for such a great company. I consider our clients to be like family, and want to make sure they get the very best care possible. I will continue to make strides to ensure this happens for every single client in every encounter they have with United Nursing Services
